A photo competition sponsored by MAGNUM!

Hey all,

A heads up on a competition with some big prizes. Details as follows:

We’ve teamed up with Magnum Photos to bring IdeasTap members the ultimate photographic competition.

The overall winner will receive more than £10,000-worth of prizes, including £5,000 cash and a £2,500 budget to produce their dream photo essay.

They’ll also win an eight-week paid internship at Magnum in London, followed by a week at their New York studio to produce their own In Motion essay.

That’s the overall winner – but all shortlisted candidates will receive expert mentoring and their work will be printed, framed and exhibited by IdeasTap. They’ll also receive a published book featuring their work.

The competition is open to IdeasTap members based in the UK aged between 16-30 and is split into three categories:

Environmental photography

Conceptual art

The winner of each category will be given a budget of £2,500 to create their own multimedia photo essay.

One overall winner will then be chosen by an expert judging panel.

The theme for this year’s award is Future – life after 2012.

Applicants must create a set within their IdeasTap portfolio containing five photographs (no more, no less) that show a vision of the future after the 2012 Olympic Games. Interpret the theme as you see fit.

Successful applications will be creative and striking photographs that catch the judges’ eyes and demonstrate photographic skill and understanding. The five photos in your portfolio must demonstrate your ability to tell a story with your images.

In the first round of judging the images will be viewed in Portfolio Presentation view on the site with a black background and no border (unless you choose to add one to your images before you upload them). Shortlisted members will have their work framed with the option of a black or white border for the exhibition.

Another Job.

I wish to inquire whether you would be interested in taking photographs at an event that the Institute of Work Psychology will be holding in June.

This is an international conference and we are expecting delegates from 18 countries. We are also holding a Gala Event on 29th June at the Kelham Island Museum which should be of interest to our visitors.

I should be please if you would let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks.. Maggie

Union photographers needed and Club nights etc next year. Get on it :]

My name’s Jack Rogers, I’m the Vice-Chair/Treasurer for the Ents committee. I’m writing to ask if anyone would be interested in taking photos for the Union on a somewhat regular basis. Currently 4 times a week we have members of our committee taking photos on a dated, very slow camera. After taking about 40 or so photos of the night the volunteers (2 people can do it a night) they then get free entry to that night and earn 5 points for each night – after gaining 25 points they can then ‘cash them in’ and get a £10 for HMV, H&M, Blackwells and Tesco. Obviously this would be extended to you as well.
In the spirit of cooperation between socities and because our photos are simply not cutting it anymore I would just like to know if anyone in the committee would at all be interested in doing club photography next year?

The nights photographed are:
Space; &
Pop Tarts

On a more immediate note the Ents office are also looking for photographers for the summer social. There’s a lot of events going on during the day and night and the office are looking for a number of photographers for the event. If anyone was at all interested in taking photos for that (and other union big nights, like end of year events, exam slam, fresher’s mania, fresher’s ball and the like) could you please let me know in the near future cos otherwise outside photographers would have to be booked in the next few days. Chris Howett the marketing manager mentioned that for the bigger events there’s a possibilty of the photographers getting paid in cash, or with union vouchers. Thought this depends on commitment and availability.
If you’re interested in either of the these opportunities could you please email back within the next couple of days to either this address or the ents email address (

Thank you,
Jack Rogers
Ents Committee.

Job anyone?

We are looking to update our staff photo board.  We have around 80 staff although not all go on the board.  It can be very difficult to get hold of everyone as we are a clinical unit and staff have to go to clinics and be in our chemotherapy treatment suite.

I wondered if any of your members would be interested in quoting for this?  They could come have a look first if required.  Have to admit we are totally externally funded from research/charitable grants so don’t have lots of spare cash to spend.

I’ll leave it with you.

Best wishes

Sounds like an interesting project…

Dear Photosoc,

I’m the research secretary for the New Dynamics of Ageing programme, the largest research project into ageing in the UK. We take a multidisciplinary approach to improving the quality of life for older people. At the moment we’re looking for photographs to use on the front cover and inside of our newsletters and the website we’re currently redesigning. I wondered if any of the Photosoc members might be interested in providing photographs for us. Any photographers who provide photos we use will receive a small payment of some kind, but most importantly they will be credited and feature in places which will be looked at often.

The photographs may be of older people or other things which evoke similar qualities (cells, old trees, for example). The photographs must represent ageing well and ageing actively in some way. Colourful, imaginative or unusual photographs would be particularly welcome. Please take a look at our website (below) for more information on our programme.

Do you think this would be something which would interest your members?

Any help with this would be really appreciated.

Many thanks,
