Elderly Animals

Pumpkin, Morgan Arabian horse, age 28

Photographer Isa Leshko travels to animal sanctuaries around America to photograph animals that are elderly or at the final stage of their lives. Leshko initially began the project as a means of exploring her feelings about her mother’s decline due to Alzheimer’s Disease, but says that she has since “come to realise that these images are a testament to survival and endurance. And they raise questions about what it means to be elderly.”

Blue, Australian Kelpie, age 19

Leshko also hopes that her photographic project will help to promote a different representation of animals in the media. In the statement that accompanies the series, she says: “Images of animals that are prevalent in popular culture generally depict animals that are juvenile… anthropomorphised, and/or infantilised. …By depicting the beauty and dignity of these creatures in their later years, I hope to challenge commonly held assumptions about these animals.”
